Choosing the Right Skates for Ice-Skating
Your skates, while important, are not as important as your boots. A pair of low figure skates of the correct size and shape does not have to be expensive or even moderately expensive to be perfectly satisfactory for a long while. I skated for several years and learned all my fundamental figures on ordinary five dollar figure skates, which today would cost approximately ten dollars.
So that you will know for yourself whether you are being sold the right blades, pick up the skates on the counter and examine them carefully. Ask for a hockey skate and hold it in your left hand. Now ask for a figure skate and hold it in your right hand. The first thing you will notice is that the hockey skate has a plain pointed end in front, while the figure skate has a series of “teeth,” or “picks.” Hold the plate of the skates in your hands with the blades facing upward, and turn the blades to the light.
You will notice that the hockey skate, in your left hand, has an absolutely straight narrow blade - that is, the length of the blade is straight from heel to toe and the width of the blade is perfectly straight across. Now look at the figure blade. You will notice that from heel to toe the blade is set on a slight curve. This is called the “radius” of the skate, and most figure skates today are set on a 7-foot radius.
Look at and feel the blade itself. You will notice that there is a hollow ridge down the center of the skate, leaving two higher edges at each side of it. This hollow ridge is called the “concave” of the skate and is what is meant by the term “hollow-ground” as applied to figure skates. The sides of the hollow ridge are the so-called “edges” of the skate, and when you have your outfit on, the edge of the skate that is nearest the inside of your foot is called the “inside edge,” and the edge nearest the outside is correspondingly called the “outside edge.” It is well to memorize these terms, for the actual skating figures are named according to which edge of the skate you use to trace them.
To get back to the skates you are holding in your hands, grasp the blades firmly with the skates perfectly level and near together. You will immediately notice that the shoe plate of the hockey skate is higher than that of the figure skate, and if you look more closely, you will see that the two upright pieces that join the toe plate and the heel plate to the blade (in other words, the “stanchions”) are much higher on the hockey skate than on the figure skate. This is important. The higher your foot is from the ice, the harder it is to keep your ankle upright. It is much the same principle as stilt walking; the lower your center of gravity, naturally the easier it is to balance.
Therefore it stands to reason that it is easier to learn to skate on the low figure skates than on the high hockey skates. Even if you are not sure you ever want to try figures, even if you think you will be content to plain skate round and round the village pond or city rink, you will find it ever so much easier to learn to navigate over the ice on figure skates. You can play everything except top drawer hockey on figure skates, but you can never trace even the simplest figures correctly or dance an ice waltz on hockey skates.

Necessary Precautions to Consider When Coaching Amateur Boxing
There are a number of necessary precautions that must be taken when engaging in boxing. In boxing, as in any other contact sport, close supervision is imperative to avoid unnecessary accidents.
In virtually every high school and college or university in the United States a boy intending to compete in basketball or football must have a certificate of physical fitness. The same precaution must be taken for a boy who wishes to box.
Makeshift facilities are to be carefully avoided. A well-padded ring enclosed properly by ropes is an absolute essential. Never permit boys to box where there is a chance of falling to a hard floor or against objects which might injure them. Follow closely the specifications set forth in the NCAA rule book, which you should obtain and read in detail.
Worn-out or broken-down boxing gloves should never be used, both for the protection of the hands and avoidance of unnecessary bruising.
Every coach should insist that his boys wear headgears, mouthpieces, and protective cups at each boxing workout. Permit no exceptions. If a mouthpiece slips out, or a headgear becomes improperly adjusted, time should be called to replace the mouthpiece or to properly adjust the headgear. To overlook these details is to be remiss in your duty as a coach or supervisor.
No boy should ever be allowed to box even a single round without properly bandaged hands. A bruised thumb could readily handicap him for an entire season, and permanent injury might also result.
We firmly adhere to a rule providing that no candidate for our team may actually box except in the presence of and under the supervision of one of the coaches. Only by this method can the coach make sure that boys of equal ability, experience, and physical proportions are matched against one another. It is a grave mistake to permit boys to pair off indiscriminately as boxing partners.
All rule books, whether for amateur boxing or professional fighting, provide that a doctor be in attendance at ringside. We don’t want to convey the impression that this is necessary because of any dangers inherent in boxing. It is a precautionary measure that is also taken in all properly supervised contact sports contests.
Virtually every high school or college conducting a competitive sports program has an M.D. who is designated as the “team physician.” Call on this man to examine carefully each boxing team candidate before he actively engages in the sport; have him observe the boy at any time you have reason to suspect any injury or illness; and require that each boy undergo examination the day of a match. This is an added precaution which eliminates the possibility of a boy who is sub-par because of illness exposing himself unnecessarily to possible injury.

Significants In The Australian Lacrosse History
Despite the earlier uncivilized form of lacrosse, the people, who saw the potential of the sport to be more of leisure game, were optimistic that it will soon be a worldwide hit. The French were the first to embrace the recreational glory of lacrosse and were considered the forefathers of the sport.
In the 1970s, the opening of the International Lacrosse Federation initiated a global reception of lacrosse and made a big mark in sports industry of many nations including Australia.
That same optimism of the French discoverers was no different to a boy’s dream of one day playing lacrosse in a land where it has not been played. And the rest, they say, is Australian lacrosse history.
One summer afternoon of 1875 at the height of Victorian gold rush in Australia, Lambton Mount, son of a migrated gold miner, finished a whole game of football with anxiety and boredom. The match between Carlton and Melbourne turned out to be dull for Mount and recalled his childhood memories of playing lacrosse to be more pleasurable.
Australian lacrosse history has it that in 1876, Mount sent a letter of request to an Australian newspaper to publicize his plans of importing lacrosse sticks from Canada. This ignited the beginning of Australian lacrosse and the eventual formation of the Melbourne Lacrosse Club. The following years were crucial to the Australian lacrosse history. Within a span of three years, four organizations were formed and totaling to 120 players. The Victorian Lacrosse Association in July 1879 governed the rules of the participating teams.
The lacrosse fever spread southwards in 1885 and thus started the South Australian Lacrosse Association (now called Lacrosse SA) in 1888. In Western Australia, the game of lacrosse was first played in 1890. A significant part of the Australian lacrosse history was in 1899 when coastal teams engaged in an exhibition game. It was then accepted by many as a regular sport and was drawing crowds up to 10,000.
A sudden ripple of change occurred in the Australian lacrosse history after the two World Wars. Lacrosse almost died out due to unavailability of sport equipment and increased prices of cost. Many, however, were persistent and were able to revive it in a few years. Today, places like Melbourne, Perth and Adelaide are supporting the lacrosse sport with utmost standards in competition.
Australian lacrosse history reveals that women also played a vital role in the sport’s success in the region. The year 1962 signaled the inauguration of the Australian Women’s Lacrosse Council or AWLC. The organization aimed to promote lacrosse in women and standardized rules and specifications.

Alonso Wins The Monaco Grand Prix - Again
Spain’s Fernando Alonso and Britain’s Lewis Hamilton achieved first and second for McLaren in the 2007 Monaco Grand Prix.
Alonso started from pole position and achieved the fastest lap time, and for most of the 78 lap race kept a three or four second lead over team-mate Lewis Hamilton. Monaco was Alonso’s 17th Formula 1 victory.
With five races in this year’s F1 Championship now gone, Spaniard Alonso and Brit Lewis Hamilton share the lead in the drivers’ championship with 38 points each, with the next two races scheduled for Canada and the US.
In his first F1 season, Lewis Hamilton has now achieved five podium finishes from five races, extending his record winning run. And although tipped by some commentators to win this year’s Monaco GP, Alonso’s fluent driving kept him at bay throughout the race.
Fellow Brits - and Monte Carlo residents - Jensen Button and David Coulthard finished the race outside of the points and well down the field, a disappointing result particularly for previous winner Coulthard, who was on the podium to receive his third place trophy in last year’s Monaco GP.
David Coulthard is part owner of the Columbus Hotel, in the Fontvieille district of Monaco.
Robert Kubica in a BMW, who like Hamilton was making his debut at Monaco, achieved an impressive fifth position, ahead of team-mate Nick Heidfield.

Lewis Hamilton commented, ‘I knew we were both extremely quick, so I could only apply pressure, but he’s a two-time world champion and he doesn’t really make mistakes.’
The Grand Prix is 77 laps around the narrow, winding streets of Monte Carlo, making the Monaco Grand Prix the most exciting in the world, with little room for driver error.
Since the first Grand Prix on April 14 1929, organised by Monte Carlo resident and founding president of the Automobile Club de Monaco Antony Noghes, the average fastest speed has risen from 50mph (80 kph) to 88mph (143 kph).
The 2008 Monaco Grand Prix will be held on Sunday 25 May.

Idling Hot in Barcelona
Followers of the 2007 International Grand Prix were treated to yet another great race this past weekend in Barcelona, Spain’s Circuit de Catalunya, as 144,000 spectators watched what was expected to be a ho-hum race, not due to F1’s exciting race car drivers or because rising Formula One Racing rookie Lewis Hamilton, driving in his fourth F1 race for 2007, but because this particular racing circuit just doesn’t pack the punch of excitement that other F1 racing circuits do.
The racing circuit just north of Barcelona, runs just shy of three miles, and contains thirteen turns. Built in 1991, this particular F1 racetrack also shares its turf as home to a yearly motorcycle Grand Prix as well. With the tight turns and long stretches of asphalt in three lengths of the course, the circuit should provide plenty of action for experienced drivers, but such is not the case. The course is routinely used for practice runs and both world-team drivers and their mechanics are extremely familiar with it, thereby spoiling the possibility of daring passes and unexpected moves on the part of drivers. The design of the course makes passing extremely difficult, and the first turn in the course is about the only place along the entire circuit where cars can actually pass one another.
Nevertheless, the 2007 Barcelona Grand Prix offered spectators a display of breath-catching excitement, or disappointment, depending on how each fan decided to take it, when Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso played bumper cars for several breathtaking seconds as they rounded the first turn, and it was there that Alonso lost his bid to win the fourth race in the Grand Prix circuit for 2007. The growing popularity of Lewis Hamilton, who had finished in the top three in the last three GP races, prompted fans, not only at the racetrack, but watching on televisions around the world, to wonder if he could keep up his streak of luck and place in the top three once again.
Against all odds, it appears that Lewis Hamilton is determined to stay near the top. He finished second at Barcelona, and is now the first rookie to lead the World Championship in his first season.
