Water Safety Treatments, Advancements and Trends

Since the 1970s, there has been an ever increasing need for pure water and this is true for all categories of users, including municipal, industrial, institutional, medical, commercial and residential users. The time in which we really need to appreciate the real value that water is has come.

The requirements for water quality have been increasing steadily, a thing which has caused the water treatment industry to begin making existing techniques better and to combine different methods as to be able to explore the new technologies that will make the water cleaner.

The improvements that have been made in recent years are considerable, but unfortunately this doesn’t stop different myths and misconceptions from existing. Moreover, dedicated scientists have found that there really are no two water treatment problems exactly the same.

Minor differences will always exist with more than one technically-acceptable and scientifically-sound solution to any given water treatment problem. The first reasonable conclusion is that there are no absolutes when it comes to water treatment issues.

Water in its pure form is considered to be one of the most aggressive solvents known and it bears the name of “universal solvent.” Water, to a certain degree of course, will dissolve virtually everything to which it is exposed or which gets exposed to it. Pure water has a high energy value. Moreover, basically like everything else in nature, it strives to achieve energy equilibrium with the surroundings.

To do that, it will attempt to dissolve the quantity of material until the solution reaches the state called saturation, which actually is the point at which there are practically no more solids that can be dissolved in the surrounding environment. The most important contaminants found in water are atmospheric gases, minerals and organic materials.

A major problem concerning water purity is bacterial contamination and control of bacterial growth. Water is essential to life, at least the way we know it. It is a necessary medium for bacterial growth because it carries the nutrients which are so important for the development of life. The water also has a thermal stability which provides a controlled environment.

Nowadays, there are four visible trends which are occurring in the world. The first one is the deterioration of the water supplies from increased chemical abuse. The second one is the development of more advanced instruments capable of detecting water contaminants.

The third trend is the growing acknowledgment of the general public towards water quality and the regulating authorities’ response in mandating high standards.

Finally, the fourth important trend refers to the development of new or refined high-technology products and biotechnology products which require ultra pure water as part of their manufacture. Water treatment techniques will require even greater sophistication in years ahead, if we want to drink pure water in the future also.
