Introducing children to music at an early age is an important step to ensuring their overall development. You may wonder what type of benefits can be derived simply through exposing your child to music, however the answer is astounding. Music is one of the primary ways that young infants begin to learn and understand the emotional connection to communication. It is often the lullabies and soft music that introduces young children to the sense of security, love, and comfort that they first experience from birth.

The benefits of exposing young children to music are plentiful. First, music creates an environment that is nurturing for self-expression. As children grow with music, they discover that they can express their own emotions through songs. Music conveys emotions such as happiness, sorrow, even anger and when young children lack the verbal vocabulary to express these emotions, they can express them through music. This is a very healthy tool that helps children develop a strong sense of emotional well-being.

Music is also a great tool for increasing memory skills in young children. Through repetition, rhythm, and rhyme children expand their vocabularies while memorizing lyrics. Educators have understood the value of teaching young children important concepts and skills by setting them to music. The alphabet song is a prime example of how memory is aided and enhanced when the skill being taught is set to music. Today, you can find virtually every skill that needs to be learned has been set to music. Additionally, nearly all public programming television shows that are geared towards children and early development have been set to music as well.

Important concepts are taught through music. Every song that a child learns teaches the basics of music such as rhythm, melody, and harmony; but there are many other lessons that children learn as well. Sequencing skills are an important aspect of logic and reasoning, and children develop and strengthen their ability to sequence when they are exposed to music at an early age. They naturally develop their sense of, “what comes next” through singing songs and they begin to understand that songs have order and meaning. This also places an educational impact on beginnings and endings, as songs conclude with a logical ending.

The more children are exposed to music, the more they are ready for other learning experiences. Music is an important activity that helps prepare them for group encounters, social interaction, and improves their own sense of self-awareness.
