I Want A Do Over
Feathers floated and swirled all over the room as I began pulling handfuls out of the huge bag of Down and placing them in a sofa cushion. During all of the years I ran my own upholstery business, I stuffed endless cushions and pillows, but I have never found a solution to preventing the mess that would occur whenever a customer requested Down feathers.
By the time I was done stuffing several cushions I looked as if I had been tarred and feathered. The lightness of the feathers created another hour of heavy clean up as thousands escaped their planned destiny and lodged in minute corners of my upholstery shop.
Sometimes I wished I had the ability to float and escape just like the feathers. However, it seems that once you begin on a certain path you must follow it no matter where it leads. I guess that’s the reason why it suddenly dawned on me that I wanted a ‘do over’.
I wanted to change my destiny and travel a different path from the one I was traveling. I wanted to go back to high school and go to college instead of getting married. I wanted to understand the person I was made to be before I took the big plunge and raised a family. I wanted to change my future by a gigantic leap in a completely different direction.
I am frustrated and disappointed in how my life turned out. Now for the first time, I am going to indulge myself in the idea of what my life would have been like if I had chosen a different path.
First of all, I would choose a more stable career where I worked for someone who gave me health insurance and of course a retirement. Being self-employed takes a lot of faith. And understanding the up’s and down’s of upholstery business and how you can have good and bad customers, well, I just wouldn’t even consider traveling that road again.
I wouldn’t be gay this time around. I would deny myself love and just not love at all. I would build a wall around myself and pretend that I didn’t need anyone. I would isolate my feelings and refuse to play the game of life because of all the pain and suffering I endured.
This way, I wouldn’t have gone through being crucified for being gay. I wouldn’t have had to deal with the humiliation of having the entire Religious Right conclude, without even knowing me, that I was an evil sinner. I wouldn’t have had to deal with the fact that my overly religious family would turn their backs on me and not care whether I was dead or alive.
And as far as the messages from God, I guess He wouldn’t have needed to talk to me, because I would have protected myself from going through anything that brought me pain. I would just stop having faith. I would go to church for friendship alone. I would live my life for the world.
Understanding flooded into my mind as the notion of starting my life again came into focus. Loneliness surfaced, forcing me to really think about what I was imagining. Would not repeating what I did before really be the best thing for me? Or, if I had chosen a different path that was easier and with less problems, would that change the person I had become?
Mark 8:34-37, “Then Jesus called the crowd and his disciples to him. ‘If anyone wants to come with me,’ he told them, ‘he must forget himself, carry his cross, and follow me. For whoever wants to save his own life will lose it; but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. Does a person gain anything if he wins the whole world but loses his life? Of course not! There is nothing he can give to regain his life.’”
When I thought of how much easier my world could have been without God, I realized that without Him I would have been loveless and forgotten by all those who were a part of my life now. I decided instead of insisting on a ‘do over’ so I wouldn’t have to repeat the pain I had experienced in life, that maybe I needed to look at the person I was today and how my experiences changed me.
I needed to carry my cross just like Jesus and see how my life measured up to God’s will. Did following God in my life make me a better person? Did the suffering I endure benefit my character and make me a more loving and caring person?
So I began looking back and reflecting on my life, while asking God for insight into the reason why the path I walked was so difficult. I asked God to give me a life review. I needed answers as to why I had to go through so much pain.
When I was young, I was known by everyone as a Christian because I refused to be influenced by evil. I didn’t smoke, drink, or use bad language. I didn’t need to party in order to have fun. I treated everyone the same way regardless of whether they were rich or poor. I cared about everyone, because Jesus gave me compassion for all people.
As a young married woman with three small children I learned to love my children unconditionally. Loving them and wanting the best for their lives inspired me to be a selfless mom. A mom who handled the times they were sick without complaining. A mom who supported them in school and helped them with their homework. A mom who didn’t judge them as they moved from childhood to adulthood and made their own mistakes in life.
When I fell in love with another woman I realized what it was to depend on Jesus as my Savior. I needed Him to save me! The persecutions I faced taught me not to judge. I learned from my experience as a gay person to forgive and love others regardless of how they treated me.
Being gay was probably the best thing that ever happened to me because I no longer needed the acceptance of people. All I needed was God and His direction in my life. It helped me to seek out information in text books and religious materials and to write books that prove that being gay is right before God.
The supernatural messages I received from God gave me strength and the ability to understand why my life was so hard. I gained revelations on the battle between good and evil. I interpreted my life according to the fight I was waging against the evil forces of Satan that were trying to defeat my game of life. I realized that I was a soldier of God’s side fighting against every evil thing that persuades people to sin in the world.
A vision of the kind of person I had become came into view and I realized I had been changed me into a more loving, caring, selfless person. A person who didn’t love money, but used money to help others. A person who denied myself pleasures in order to serve others. A person who loved unconditionally. A person who refused to judge.
I thought about how different I was from the moment I began to play the game of life. I liked the person I was now more than the person I was when I was young. I guess I didn’t really want a ‘do over’ after all. I really just needed to see that all the pain and suffering was worth it.
I’m not like the people of the world floating about like a feather and making a mess out of my life because I cared only about myself. I have a purpose and a destiny to help others understand their lives in a different way. I have a call to open people’s eyes to seeing their world as a life game.
Yes I have suffered. Yes I have endured many pains, but most of all I have learned a lot. My faith in God has opened my eyes to the injustices people face in this world. The wisdom I have gained has taught me to love all people regardless of who they are. The knowledge I have to share, I give to the world in hope that they will understand that every bad thing that happens to people is not meant to hurt them, but to challenge them be better people.
Mark 8: 38, “If a person is ashamed of me and of my teaching in this godless and wicked day, then the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
Jesus came to save people. He came to help us conquer the evils of this world by changing us into more caring, loving, selfless people. The world may have seen my life as a disaster, but God saw the person He wanted me to become.
God saw me as a person who would reign beside Him in eternity. I know now that I don’t want a ‘do over’. Everything I have been through in my life has made me worthy of a greater reward in the world to come.
Trust in God. Look back and see how He has changed you through the experiences you have faced. Lift high your arms, because Jesus is coming soon. Be selfless and love God! God always has your best interest in mind.

What Makes A Person Good Or Bad
Families all around the world, from all walks of life, gathered around their television for the latest breaking news. A famous anchorman had just confessed for the last thirty years he had been a closeted homosexual. Most people did not believe it was true.
It seems that this man had stayed married and was faithful to his wife for over thirty years. Raised a family, saw his children through college and even marriage, he never acted on his feelings for the same sex until now.
Does all the achievements of this man get thrown aside because now he is gay? Does his faithfulness to his wife and children count for nothing? Is the religious right justified when they tell all of their listeners to stop watching this particular man’s broadcast?
What makes a person good or bad? Is it their sexual orientation? Or rather is it what kind of person they are when they face problems. Does the person display integrity? Does he show, by his actions, that he is of high moral character? Is he trustworthy and a person you can count on when you’re going through hard times?
A woman who had committed adultery was brought to Jesus so he would condemn her to death. It was only right for Him to do this because this was the command as written in the Jewish law for handling such women. Instead Jesus shocked the people!
John 8:7, “As they stood there asking him questions, he straightened up and said to them, ‘Which ever one of you has committed no sin may throw the first stone at her.’”

What makes people good or bad? Is it their ability to judge the difference between right and wrong? Or is it how we show compassion while urging a person to look at their life and make their own choice to change.
Jesus asked a Samaritan woman to give Him a drink of water. It was totally forbidden in the Jewish Law to have anything to do with these people. It’s like a gang member talking to one of the rival gangs, it is forbidden and usually results in blood shed. Jesus overstepped these boundaries and broke the law in order to convince this woman to believe that He was the promised Messiah. Jesus crossed ethnic barriers, because he loved all people equally.
Jesus called Matthew, a Jewish man, who was a despised tax collector for the Roman government. Matthew invited him to a meal at his home.
Matthew 9:10-13, “While Jesus was having a meal in Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and other outcasts came and joined Jesus and his disciples at the table. Some Pharisees saw this and asked his disciples, ‘Why does your teacher eat with such people?’
Jesus heard them and answered, ‘People who are well do not need a doctor, but only those who are sick. Go and find out what is meant by the scripture that says: ‘It is kindness that I want, not animal sacrifices.’ I have not come to call respectable people, but outcasts.’”
What makes a person good or bad? According to Jesus it is not what family you were born into. It is not what sexual sin you committed. It is not about what kind of job you have. It is not about the evil that all men commit. It is about kindness. It is about the love we have for God, who created every good thing on this earth.
When Jesus made this statement, He was actually quoting Hosea.
Hosea 6: 5&6, “That is why I have sent my prophets to you with my message of judgment and destruction. What I want from you is plain and clear: I want your constant love, not your animal sacrifices. I would rather have my people know me than burn offerings to me.”
What makes a person good or bad? It is whether or not that person knows God. A good person loves God. A good person shows compassion to others. A good person does not judge.
We live in a very complicated world where judgment is the reason why we fight wars against other countries. Judgment condemns the murderer. Judgment makes societies, churches, and families throw out their children in the name of sin.
But this is not what Jesus came to teach. Jesus came to proclaim that laws can be broken in the name of kindness and love. Jesus brought a new teaching that changed our world because it was not about condemning people it was about loving people.
Isaiah 56:3-6, “Let no foreigner who has bound himself to the Lord say, ‘The Lord will surely exclude me from his people.’
And let not any eunuch complain, ‘I am only a dry tree.’
For this is what the Lord says: ‘To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths, who choose what pleases me and hold fast to my covenant-to them I will give within my temple and its walls a memorial and a name better than sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name that will not be cut off.’”
What makes a person good or bad? According to these scriptures everyone is welcomed into the loving arms of God. Many people do not understand that eunuchs refer to female men. They were gay men that were not attracted to women, this way they could be completely trusted not to commit adultery with the kings wives. The eunuch’s roles in the kingdom was to mange the affairs of high society women.
Why does the Religious Right condemn gay people? Many have never done the research to see they have made wrong judgments. Some have the facts, but are unwilling to stand up to the ones who are in charge of the church denominations. Most would rather turn there backs because when you stand up for truth you are persecuted by those who use churches for their on propaganda.
What makes a person good or bad? A good person speaks the truth and never judges another person. We accept people for who they are and we love our families unconditionally never allowing another person to tell us not to love.

To know God is to walk into the light of a new understanding. Pick up your Bible and read it. Listen to the Holy Spirit that prompts you to love. Pray and believe that Jesus can and will save you when you are judged unfairly. Remember most of all, God is Love!

Is Either Creation or Evolution the Right Answer?
The choice between creation and evolution as an explanation for human existence is a source of ongoing debate. The two camps of belief from both religion and science have been at odds on this topic in American society for many years without much compromise. People of both extremes have exerted their will on the education and judicial justice systems in order to influence American society.
Creationists want literal bible scriptures related to creation taught to children in schools, while Evolutionists want them to learn evolution. What should dominate American culture - religious belief in creation or scientific belief in evolution? The following historical event took place in pursuit of the answer to this very same question.
In the 1920s during social structure chaos, Traditionalists worried that their beliefs were crumbling. Modernists stopped looking to society for approval for their actions; they were only concerned that their actions lived up to their intellect. Intellectualism flourished during that time, while Americans danced to Jazz, drank alcoholic beverages during prohibition, and debated abstract Freudian theories. As a result of this traditional social revivalism became strong, especially in the South.
Journalists were looking for a showdown during that time and found one in a Dayton, Tennessee courtroom in the summer of 1925. A jury was deciding the fate of John Scopes, a high school biology teacher charged with illegally teaching the theory of evolution. Secondary to the actual anti-evolution statute the trial emerged as an interpretation conflict between social and intellectual values.
William Jennings Bryan, a previous Democratic candidate for President led the prosecution as a Fundamentalist to banish Darwin’s theory of evolution from American classrooms. Other prominent lawyers were A. T. Stewart, Ben B. McKenzie, and Bryan’s son, federal prosecutor William Jennings Bryan Jr.. The defense team was lead by the famed Clarence Darrow and was joined by Arthur Garfield Hays, a prominent free speech advocate, and Dudley Field Malone, an international divorce attorney.
A carnival atmosphere pervaded in Dayton as the trial began July 10, 1925. The prosecution opened its case by asking the court to take judicial notice of the Book of Genesis, as it appears in the King James Version, and received it. The defense called its first witness, Dr. Maynard Metcalf, a zoologist from the Johns Hopkins University, over objections from the prosecution.
The prosecution mocked Metcalf’s exposition of the theory of evolution, complaining that the evolutionists had man descending from Old World monkeys. Then the defense began a series of questions designed to undermine the literal interpretation of the Bible… asking questions about Jonah being swallowed by a whale, Joshua making the sun stand still, Noah and the great flood, the temptation of Adam in the Garden of Eden, and the creation according to Genesis.
The Scopes trial by no means ended the debate over the teaching of evolution, but it did represent a significant setback for the anti-evolution forces. Of the fifteen states with anti- evolution legislation pending in 1925, only two states (Arkansas and Mississippi) enacted laws restricting teaching of Darwin’s theory.
Some Creationist believe that famous scientists such as Einstein and Hawking believe: “God does not play dice with the Universe.” But to truly understand what Einstein meant by that, you have to see into his views toward god and religion because scientists often use the word “god” to mean the laws of nature.
The Creationist-Evolutionist controversy represents two ways of relating to the world. One being belief based on unreasoned conviction and the other based on reasoned. In other words belief in the literal interpretation of the bible as opposed the scientific rationalistic approach, stemming from men like Thales, Aristotle, and reinterpreted through Galileo, Newton, and others.
The Enquiring Mind:
If you want to find a solution to this dilemma you’ll find clues on both sides of the debate. For example scientists believe that the universe began with a Big Bang. From their prospective it’s reasonable to believe that something cannot be created from nothing? And therefore, if that’s true then that something is what created the universe. Call it God, cosmic law or whatever else, it’s beyond comprehension at this time in human development.
Being that humans are said to use only about 10% of there brain power… and use language limiting the ability to understand and convey universal law, there is no wander that the human species has a limited understanding of its true origin. To expect human kind to know and understand the source of its existence is like asking a toddler to explain quantum physics.
Where do these two beliefs find their basis of conflict? Creationist find their information in the Bible, while Evolutionist find their’s in the science of Biology. Is there a conflict between Science and Religion? If you take the Fundamentalist approach (everything in the Bible is to be taken literally), then there is conflict. If, on the other hand, the Bible is not taken literally, then there is room to grow in harmony with universal knowledge with no conflict.

Global Warming - What Can We Do to help?
Global warming refers to the increase in average temperature near the earth’s surface and in its oceans. Climate change is another term used interchangeably with global warming. However, climate change may encompass other changes in climate besides increases in temperature.
In the past century the average air temperature near the earth’s surface has increased by around 1.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Various models have attempted to predict how these temperature changes may impact on the future. They variously predict increases from 2.5 to 10.4 degrees Fahrenheit. Most scientists agree that temperatures are likely to continue increasing. However, they do not agree nearly as much when it comes to predicting the magnitude of the increase.
So what actually causes the increased temperatures?
The earth’s temperature is affected by many factors such as:
The earth’s orbit - The tilt of the earth axis as it revolves around the sun influences the amount of sunlight reaching earth. Therefore changes in the earth’s orbit affects its surface temperature.
Changes in intensity of heat emitted by the sun can also affect temperature on earth.
Volcanic activity - Lava, ash, dust and hot gases from volcanic eruptions can create volcanic aerosols which reflect heat away from the earth’s surface and result in cooler temperatures. For instance 1816 is said to have been a year without a summer - widely believed to have been a result of the eruption of the Tambora volcano in Indonesia in the previous year. On the other hand, volcanoes also emit huge quantities of Carbon Dioxide, which tend to have the opposite effect and could lead to higher temperatures.
The causes listed above have existed for a very long time. However, since the Industrial Revolution and especially since 1900 another cause has taken precedence. Increased use of fossil fuels and the resulting emissions of carbon dioxide have caused massive increases in greenhouse gases. This has led to increased temperatures through the greenhouse effect.
What is the greenhouse effect and how does it impact on surface temperature?
The earth receives heat from the sun. The earth loses heat by reflecting it back into the atmosphere. The atmosphere contains a mixture of gases that trap heat and keep the earth’s surface warm. This is similar to the mechanism that keeps the inside of a garden greenhouse warmer than the outside. These greenhouse gases are vital for life on earth. If they did not exist it is likely that earth would be too cold to sustain life. However, too much of a good thing can have bad consequences. As a result of our energy intensive lifestyles and the burning of vast quantities of fossil fuels the levels of greenhouse gases have been increasing rapidly which magnifies the greenhouse effect and traps more and more heat close to the earth’s surface. Greenhouse gases are primarily Water vapor, Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrous Oxide and Ozone.
What are the consequences of global warming?
As the earth becomes hotter all year round the incidence of droughts and wildfires will increase. There is already evidence of this in effect. Many US cities have recorded their hottest ever temperatures within the last 3 decades and vast areas worldwide are drought affected and subject to horrific wildfires.
Warmer water in the oceans feeds energy into more and more powerful storms and dangerous hurricanes. The warmer seas also result in melting of glaciers and ice caps that in turn cause higher sea levels and flooding of coastal communities. Many small island nations in the Pacific face the prospect of becoming totally submerged in the very near future.
Spread of insect borne diseases such as malaria- Areas which were previously inhospitable to hosts of these diseases such as mosquitoes become breeding grounds as temperatures change. This could lead to the spread of tropical diseases to more temperate areas.
Changes in climate will also push many species of animals and plants to extinction as they struggle to survive in their changing environments.
As with most debates there are the naysayers, predominant among them is the American Association of Petroleum Geologists, the only scientific society that rejects the conclusion that global warming is a threat.
However, if the 30 other scientific societies and academies who support the findings of global warming are to be believed, the consequences are obviously serious if not downright frightening! So what’s being done to control it?
Governments around the world have undertaken programs to cut back the level of emissions of greenhouse gases. For instance in the US the government has a strategy in place to reduce emissions by 18% over the 10 year period 2002 to 2012. To this end the Environmental Protection Agency has implemented many initiatives to encourage the reduction of emissions by various industries and other stakeholders.
However, this is not a responsibility that rests exclusively with government or regulatory bodies. Every individual contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and therefore has an obligation to help cut back.
What can an individual do to help?
The list of ways to cut back on emissions is probably as long as the many ways that energy is expended but there are several obvious and relatively easy ways to achieve improvements:
In the US about half of greenhouse gas emissions come from power plants while about a third comes from transportation. Any activity that cuts back on power usage or reduced use of transportation would have a positive impact.
Using energy efficient electrical appliances including compact fluorescent lights instead of traditional globes would help. In the US energy efficient appliances in more than 50 categories can be identified by their “Energy Star” rating.
Similarly using more fuel-efficient cars or perhaps even reducing the use of cars and opting for more “green” transport methods such a bicycles, using public transport or even walking could help.
Using vehicles that run on renewable fuel sources such as E85 (A fuel containing 85% Ethanol) or bio-diesel.
Ensuring that tire pressures are at appropriate levels and your vehicles engine is tuned to manufacturers specifications would also help reduce fuel consumption.
Switching to greener sources of energy. Using solar power directly where the technology permits. Where there is no option but to use electricity or other traditional energy sources then it may be possible to make this purchase from a supplier who uses green, non fossil fuel sources to produce it.
Planting trees to offset the effects of the carbon dioxide emissions created in the production of the energy and other products one consumes is another alternative. It isn’t necessary to do this oneself. Around the world there are organizations that are gearing up to do this on behalf of the many millions of concerned consumers. So for instance a power company could estimate the greenhouse gases emitted to produce a kilowatt-hour of electricity and then allow its customers an opportunity to pay to offset these emissions and become “carbon neutral”.
Other ways of conserving energy would include cutting back on waste thereby saving on the energy that would be expended on replacement of the wasted item - Recycle and reuse whenever possible.
Saving on water consumption - A huge amount of energy is spent on purifying water for consumption so cutting back on water waste will help considerably.
Ensuring you have efficient insulation and that cooling and heating appliances are cleaned and primed to work efficiently.
Although individual actions may seem trivial their cumulative impact worldwide can be literally life changing. It is clear that much can be done at an individual level to control global warming. Although they cannot agree on the magnitude of global warming the overwhelming majority of the scientific community agree that it is a very real problem. The time for action is now! The consequences of doing nothing are just too frightening to comprehend!
